Abstract
After briefly reviewing some of the basic notions of operator algebras that are relevant for the algebraic approach to quantum physics, I will discuss two classes of C*-algebras that are relevant in quantum physics, namely the Weyl algebra and the CAR (or fermionic) algebra. Then, three examples of recent applications will be discussed: (i) the use of the GNS construction in the study of entanglement in systems of identical particles (ii) the Sorkin-Johnston state for scalar fields in curved spacetimes and (iii) the relation between the Shale-Stinespring theorem and the topology underlying the (thermodynamic) phase transition in the Ising model.
