I will use the baryon spectrum as a motivation to give a brief introduction to Dyson-Schwinger equations, which are nonperturbative tools to determine the n-point functions of QCD. I will discuss some examples for the quark and gluon propagators, the quark-gluon vertex and three-gluon vertex. In combination with Bethe-Salpeter equations, these methods allow one to calculate hadron properties such as their masses, form factors and scattering amplitudes.
