Abstract: Last year, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) announced the discovery of gravitational waves from black-hole binaries that collide in the most energetic collisions we have observed in the Universe so far. I will give an introduction to the analysis methods behind these great discoveries and show how theoretical models of gravitational-wave signals help us decipher weak spacetime oscillations that are buried in instrument noise.
