Description
Frank Ohme (LIGO)
Abstract: Orbiting black-hole binaries emit gravitational waves. Details of these signals have been studied theoretically with ever increasing sophistication over decades, and with the breakthrough discovery of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) in September 2015 we have gained access to direct measurements of black-hole mergers. In my talk, I will both summarise the observations LIGO has made in its first observing run and highlight the progress and challenges of theoretical models that play a crucial role in interpreting the experimental data.
