Spin foams and background independent renormalization

Spin foams models are a background independent path integral
approach to quantum gravity. In a nutshell, they can be seen as generalized
lattice gauge theories, where the sum over geometries is encoded in a sum
over group-theoretic data encoding the shape and face areas of polyhedra.
In this talk I will give a brief introduction to spin foams and outline the
construction for 4D quantum gravity. After reviewing some of their
achievements I will discuss open outstanding issues and how these are
addressed by renormalization. To do so I will introduce a framework for
renormalizing background independent theories and how numerical methods are
used to implement this scheme in practice.
